Who we are?
IDA is an international independent non-governmental organization providing medical and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflicts, natural disasters and epidemics regardless of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.
IDA was founded in 2012 by Syrian doctors from Aleppo in response to the healthcare and humanitarian crisis in Syria.
IDA Syria is the main healthcare provider in the Northern Aleppo/Syria area, working closely with 500,000 IDPs and 700,000 host community through 20 healthcare facility and other health and nutrition projects
During last year, IDA has provided 1.2 million services in Heath, Nutrition, WaSH and Camp Management
Main tasks and Activities
Strategic direction:
• Define and periodically review IDA's mission, vision, and core values, ensuring organizational programs remain fully aligned.
• Guide IDA's strategic positioning within Syria's evolving health sector, including engagement with health authorities and roles in health system strengthening and recovery.
• Approve major strategic decisions outside the annual plan, including opening or closing facilities, major contracts, strategic partnerships, and expansion into new thematic areas.
Oversight and accountability:
• Appoint the external auditor, review audit management letters, and monitor full implementation of audit recommendations.
• Oversee clinical governance, patient safety, and quality standards across all IDA health services in compliance with national and international benchmarks.
• Ensure robust organizational mechanisms exist for complaints, whistleblowing, and community feedback, with mandatory direct escalation of critical safeguarding, fraud, or security incidents to the Board.
• Establish an independent Board-level reporting channel for sensitive Safeguarding and Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (PSEAH) concerns, particularly those involving executive leadership.
• Conduct periodic reviews of the organizational risk register, covering operational, legal, financial, and context specific security risks in Syria.
• Uphold humanitarian principles, independence, and neutrality in all organizational operations and stakeholder engagements.
• Safeguard organizational assets and reputation through approval and oversight of procurement, asset management, and delegation of authority policies.
• Ensure legal compliance, statutory registration, and timely updates to internal bylaws and governance frameworks.
Leadership:
• Define annual performance objectives for the General Director and approve employment terms.
• Maintain effective succession and continuity planning for the General Director and key leadership roles.
• Approve the organizational structure, compensation frameworks, and salary scales.
Resource mobilization and representation:
• Drive funding diversification strategy across local, private sector, and diaspora revenue streams to reduce donor dependency.
• Protect institutional reputation, ensuring official public communications are restricted to the Board Chair or authorized designers.
Board effectiveness:
• Maintain strict governance boundaries by refraining from direct operational instructions to staff, routing all official communications exclusively through the General Director.
• Participate in annual Board performance self-assessments, orientation, and governance development programs.
• Comply with the Board Code of Conduct, upholding collective Board decisions once formally adopted.
• Ensure accurate minuting, formal documentation, and systematic follow-up of all Board decisions and meetings.
• Participate actively in board recruitment and nomination processes to preserve balanced skills and expertise.
• Maintain strict adherence to humanitarian principles, protection standards, organizational Code of Conduct, Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEAH), and Child Protection policies.
